Episode 002 – Dr. Timothy P. Nixon – (Part 2 of 2)

Hello everyone!  Welcome back to the #iNGREDiENTS podcast!  I am really excited to share Episode 002 with you which contains part two of my discussion with my father, Dr. Timothy P. Nixon, on July 24, 2016.  My dad serves as the Executive Secretary for the Lake Region Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists.

In Part 2 of our discussion Dr. Nixon talks about how Christians can create opportunities for meaningful conversations on social justice issues (3:00); the importance of moral guidance to the Civil Rights Movement and how the church today may be missing this opportunity (5:30); the struggles he faced in sustaining meaningful conversations on race & social issues during his time at Andrews University which led to him feeling burnt out (9:30); his biggest dissapointment in connection with the lack of movement on these issues in the church (17:15); the unwillingness of many at Andrews to take the risks necessary to impact true change in relation to these issues (19:00); the Adventist Church’s sad history as it pertains to racism & racially segregated conferences – what was really behind the origin of the separation in the NAD and why we continue to need Regional Conferences (24:00); what would lead to an immediate process of reconciliation & integration between State & Regional Conferences (28:15); how we engage people who don’t see value in these discussions (32:25); and a new initiative Dr. Nixon & I plan to start in order to create a new forum where underrepresented voices in our church can submit opinion pieces on these important issues (37:45).
